It took nearly the entire game for the Station Camp Lady Bison to wear down their opposition, the Lady Cougars of Dickson County, but once Dickson tired, the dominance of the Maroon and Gray was unmatched.  As the final period came to a close in the Region 5 basketball opening round, the Station Camp Lady Bison secured a win in front of a home crowd last Friday night, 73-59, to move onward to face powerhouse Clarksville in the tournament second round.

Station Camp played to an 18-18 tie after the first period.  After senior Heather Hughes hit the opening basket of the game, the Lady Bison enjoyed as many as a five-point advantage in the opening period.  Dickson County would mount a charge, and before the conclusion of the first period, the Cougars would take a three-point advantage, 18-15.  Sophomore Chelsea Davis would knot the score at 18 with a three point shot before the end of the period.

The second period would end as the game began, tied.  Station Camp were down by four points late in the second period, but a Cheyenne North steal and lay in followed by a North assist to Janasia Williams tied the contest, 33-33 as the second quarter came to a close.

At the break, North led all scorers with fifteen points.  Hughes and Williams each had four points.  Kensley Covington and Davis each had three points and Chelsea Parker and McKenzie Keele entered intermission with two points.

Exiting the halftime locker room, each team showed resolve to earn a spot in the semi final round of the Regional Tournament.  As a by-product, the two remained close throughout the quarter’s entirety.  Dickson County ended the third period with a one-point advantage, 47-46.

The fourth quarter proved to be the decided factor in the contest.  Station Camp’s press defense forced Lady Cougar turnovers by which the Maroon and Gray capitalized.  The break away began with Hughes placing back-to-back baskets, one of which a three pointer, on the board.  North followed Hughes by placing back-to-back baskets in Bison favor to extend to an eight-point advantage.

A North block on the ensuing Dickson possession prompted a timeout by Lady Cougar Head Coach Kelly Stevenson.  The break in play saw the Lady Bison unaffected, as North found Williams alone under the basket to increase the Bison advantage to double digits.

Dickson County would never recover, and with 1:12 on the clock would resort to fouls in an effort to extend the game.  Unfortunately each time a foul was called the ball was in North’s hands.  North would end the game by going eight of eight from the free throw line.

The contest would fall in favor of the Lady Bison, 73-59.

North led all scorers with a game-high thirty two-point night.  Hughes ended the night with nineteen.  Williams, Keele and Parker would contribute four apiece to the winning cause.    Covington, and Davis ended the night with three points apiece and Kia Perry rounded out all scoring with two points in the second half.

Afterwards North said, “We wanted to come out and play our game.  Dickson County is a good ball team and we knew we would have to play as a team to win.  We did that tonight.”

Lady Bison Head Coach Kendra Jackson added, “We were able to get solid contributions from several players tonight.  Though we missed some shots early, we were able to knock down some key shots late in the game and that proved to be the difference.”

With the win, the Lady Bison earned a spot in the semi-final round of the Region 5 tournament.  Jackson spoke of their opponent, “Clarksville is a good basketball team.  It should be a real test for us.  They are big inside and have a couple of great shooters along the perimeter.  We have to come out and give a good effort on both sides of the court.”
